Earlier this year, Minister of International Trade and Industry, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, revealed that Perodua was scheduled to begin mass production of its first electric vehicle (EV) at the end of 2025. This timing aligns with the eventual lifting of price cap protection measures.
Recently, Minister Zafrul reiterated this timeframe in another post. He met with senior Perodua executives, including President and CEO Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad, to discuss the development of the automaker’s EV project and explore ways the government could support its success.
While emphasizing Perodua’s role as the lead in producing affordable EVs under the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030), Zafrul did not provide specific details on the project’s current development status.
Previously, he hinted that Perodua had collaborated with an unnamed “international automotive company” to create an electric-powered prototype. It is widely believed that this partner is Daihatsu, Perodua’s technical collaborator and shareholder.
Despite the lack of official information, some indicators suggest that Perodua’s electrification project may result in a hatchback-styled EV. Notably, the Electric Motion Online (EMO) concept, showcased as a scale model in May 2023, envisioned a Myvi-sized EV equipped with a 50 kWh battery and a travel range of up to 350 km.
As we approach KLIMS 2024 in December, it remains to be seen whether Perodua will unveil a concept model, providing further insights into their electric future.
