Handling Repo EVs: Don’t Kill the Battery, The High Stakes of Improper EV Storage

G-Mart’s Handling Repo EVs: Don’t Kill the Battery, The High Stakes of Improper EV Storage

As electric vehicles (EVs) continue gaining traction in Malaysia’s automotive market, the landscape of vehicle repossession and remarketing is rapidly evolving. At G-Mart Auction, we are witnessing a steady rise in the number of EVs entering our warehouse and auction platform, a trend that underscores the need for all stakeholders, especially financial institutions, to understand the unique handling requirements of these technologically advanced vehicles.

🔑 The Growing Problem: Missing Key Fobs & Key Cards

Unlike traditional vehicles, EVs are deeply integrated with digital systems. They are inaccessible and often immovable without their original key fob or key card, which controls critical functions such as:

  • System ignition and power-up
  • Access to charging ports
  • Vehicle security and immobilisation

When key fobs or cards are not included at the point of repossession, the implications are serious. Vehicles cannot be tested, moved, or even charged, leading to delayed remarketing, increased holding costs, and a significant drop in resale value. Replacing these keys is not straightforward  as it often involves reprogramming by the manufacturer, which can take weeks and cost thousands of ringgit.

G-Mart strongly advises hirers of repossessed EVS to surrender their original key fobs or access cards to the respective banks or storage facilities like G-Mart Corporation.

Battery Matters: The Risk of Improper EV Storage

Another overlooked aspect of EV repossession is battery health during storage. EVs are powered by two critical electrical systems: a high-voltage traction battery and a low-voltage (12V) auxiliary battery. If improperly stored, both systems are at risk.

Risks of Deep Discharge:

  • Permanent battery degradation or failure
  • 12V system shutdown, disabling locks, diagnostics, and power-up
  • Software corruption and data loss
  • Overheating risks if cooling systems go offline in high temperatures

Many EV manufacturers explicitly warn that storing vehicles with low battery levels for prolonged periods can lead to irreversible damage which can cost tens of thousands of ringgit in battery pack replacement.

 G-Mart’s EV Handling Protocols

At G-Mart Auction, we’ve implemented a stringent EV intake and handling protocol to preserve asset integrity:

  1. Pre-Storage Checks
    • Battery charge level must be between 20% and 60%
    • Key fob/card is registered and secured
    • 12V system is tested and recharged if necessary
  2. Secure, Climate-Conscious Storage
    • EVs are stored in shaded and ventilated areas
    • Periodic checks to maintain battery levels and prevent parasitic drain
  3. Transport via Flatbed Tow Only
    • Prevents electric motor and inverter damage
    • Compliant with OEM towing guidelines

As EV adoption accelerates in Malaysia, proper repossession and storage procedures will define whether these assets retain or lose their value in the secondary market. At G-Mart, we are proud to lead the charge in creating a safe, secure, and intelligent ecosystem for EV remarketing, and we call on all our partners to do the same.
